today i was mesmerized by the arts section of the times. with the armory show and all the other fairs being written about, i am so curious to see works in person… i will surely stomp around the city this weekend.
the image of the pompeii fresco got my attention and made me think of when i saw the ruins in person ten years ago. the frescos recovered from the ruins are magical. the italians called the underpaintings/drawings “sinopia.” outlines were made of an earthy color and pigmented the flesh tones. the sinopia sketches were raw, sometimes unfinished and honest. very powerful.
