While eating breakfast, I usually read the news on my laptop. This normally consists of a browse through Google News Reader, following topics of interest as well as breaking news stories. Lately, though, I’ve been spending more and more time following links posted on Facebook. Though there is some overlap in terms of topics, there is often a personal or testimonial edge to reading something on Facebook after reading your friend’s comment about the story. And the comments are a great place to leave behind your thoughts for others.

I decided to conduct an experiment and search “Occupy Wall Street” to see what came up. The results were quite different. While Google brought forward news stories of various elements relating to the protest, Facebook delivered mostly direct documents. The absolute first thing was a past event, a celebration of Yom Kippur at Liberty Square. Following that are results including the website for occupywallstreet.org and the demands of the protesters, a photographer who has been documenting the scene, a video showing police arresting marchers on the roadway of the Brooklyn Bridge, and a field recording of the human microphone in action. Contrarily, the final link is journalistic – Keith Olbermann’s pointing out the media blackout of the protest at the end of the first week of the “occupation.”

You can follow the results for both searches in the lists below.
