Chris Garcia, “73”, Nov. 8, 2011

I constructed “73” from the pages of AM New York, a free daily newspaper designed for morning commuters. The whole paper is designed to be read in the span of a subway ride, so it is usually pretty sparse with information.

Today, I flipped through the paper and saw Lindsay again, and a story about Amanda Knox breaking up with her boyfriend. Under the Amanda Knox story, there was a small clip, a little larger than a postage stamp,  that stated there were at least 73 children, 14 and under, serving life sentences in prison. This is a small percentage compared to the 2,000 inmates who are currently imprisoned who committed crimes before the age of 18.

These figures shocked and saddened me. The thought that these children, no matter how horrible their crimes, were dismissed by society and never allowed to live beyond the classification of criminal, seems like a waste.
