“Day 59”

I constructed Day 59 from the pages of AM New York, a free daily newspaper designed for morning commuters. The whole paper is designed to be read in the span of a subway ride, so it is usually pretty sparse with information.

Today was officially the 59th day of the Occupation of Wall Street. Zuccotti Park remains the steady bedrock of the movement, with no end in sight, while many compatriot movements have been driven out. This past weekend, Occupiers in Portland were issued an eviction notice, 17 people were arrested in Denver as the police forced them out of an occupied park, 27 were arrested in Saint Louis after they refused to leave a local plaza, and 19 people were arrested in Salt Lake City after ignoring police orders to vacate a park.

The strange thing is that the success of the Wall Street Occupation is mostly due to Mike Bloomberg! The police are present and stepping in occasionally, but they are also cautious to not interfere with the right of free speech. Bloomberg recognizes the fragile political nature of this movement and has been walking a thin line between acceptance and condemnation
