Born and raised in East Texas, Mary Button is a theologian, social activist, and artist. In 2006, she received a B.F.A in Photography and Imaging from Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. With the assistance of the Rosenberg Fellowship, Mary created The Hymnbook Project (www.thehymnbookproject.org) a series of artist books created from hymnals collected from churches across the American South. This project led to collaborative work with Ecumenical Women at the United Nations, the National Council of Churches, and the Lutheran World Federation.

In 2011, Mary graduated from Candler School of Theology with a Master of Theological Studies. Her master’s thesis was a visual exploration of the Conversion of Paul set along the Natchez Trace. (thepaulproject.com) She is currently the Minister of Visual Art at First Congregational Church in Memphis, Tennessee.
